Knee joint ultrasound examination (1 region per limb)
For complaints in or around the knee joint. The examination assesses the amount of joint fluid, possible causes, the degree of cartilage wear, and the condition of the fibrous cartilage (menisci), tendons, ligaments, and muscles that stabilize the knee. Inflammatory and traumatic changes can be distinguished. It also helps rule out other causes of the symptoms, such as deep vein thrombosis or other soft tissue conditions (Baker’s cyst, superficial vein thrombosis, ganglion or meniscus cyst, tumor, etc.). It is recommended to have an X-ray of the joint beforehand and, if possible, an evaluation by an orthopedist, traumatologist, or rheumatologist. However, if it is unclear which direction to take first and there is no indication for urgent care, an ultrasound can also be the initial examination.
