Neck artery ultrasound
Neck artery examination helps determine the amount and type of potential calcified or fatty deposits in the neck vessels, as well as the speed of blood flow and the characteristics of the flow curve. From this, conclusions can be drawn about the degree of narrowing caused by the plaques and potential blockage of the main arteries supplying the brain, which can help prevent strokes.
The condition of the carotid arteries generally reflects the state of other arteries in the body, highlighting potential narrowing in other organs, such as the heart or limbs. Targeted examination and treatment can prevent conditions like heart attacks and other vascular obstructions. Narrowing is more likely in individuals with high cholesterol or fatty acid levels, diabetes, other metabolic disorders, or in smokers. Early detection of these changes can allow partial reversal, prevention, or halting of progression.
In cases of known narrowing, follow-up can determine the progression over time, measure treatment effectiveness, and indicate when surgery may be recommended to preserve circulation.
