Thyroid, neck soft tissue, and salivary gland examinations

Thyroid examination helps identify asymptomatic thyroid abnormalities as well as those causing symptoms, such as unsuccessful weight loss or gain, high blood pressure, a sensation of a lump, or difficulty swallowing or breathing. It allows differentiation of benign or malignant nodules, inflammations, or other issues and helps determine appropriate further steps.

Thyroid nodules are classified using the most up-to-date system developed by the American College of Radiology, which currently provides the best guidance on whether follow-up or biopsy is necessary for a given nodule.
During the examination, the thyroid glands, salivary glands, neck lymph nodes, and surrounding structures are evaluated, as well as any palpable lumps or swellings in the neck.
